Who is misinforming who?
Keep jumping to those conclusions don't you.
I really do expect better from so called "professionals".
Both of you have assumed he has done nothing other than replace the cover of a standard socket........ Naughty.... :doh:Not Again0 -
Hi All,
Wow it's all been going on here since I last checked in. First of all thank you everybody for all your advice, and sorry I couldn't reply sooner.
Just to clear things up, it was replacing a fully working light switch that got broken. When I bought the switch I was a little unsure it was the right one and if I'd wired it up correctly, as it's currently not working, so wanted to make sure that the wiring was still live. So no checking of the Fuse board, that is well out of my comfort zone! I'll be a little clearer next time.
Based on the feedback I think I basic one will suffice for this job.
Thanks all again for your speedy replies, I'll be using this forum again.0 -

Buy a cheap one. They will do the job. Yes they do work up to 600volts (if you wanted to know).
Are they 100% accurate (i'm guessing they ain't perfect - but you don't care if it reads 235Volts or 239.84Volts - if it reads over 150Volts you've got power).
A cheap one will do your job nicely.
(I bought mine for about fiver half price from Maplin in a January sale)
Adding: Just make sure you set the dial to ~600 (ie alternating current up to 600 Volts) putting on ~200 isn't wise and definately not on direct current (not that it would kill you - just wouldn't tell you anything). Electricity needn't be scary as long as you aren't stupid (testing with your tongue is going to hurt a lot)There is no intelligent life out there ... ask any goldfish!0 -

You might want to consider ones with better hand grips & insulation if you are going to be mucking about with live wires though. Not Again0
