What actually happens when you turn the laptop on, does anything come on the screen?

Have you tried the recovery CD's or does it have a recovery partition?

On start up it goes to windows repair and says it is repairing for 3-4 minutes before getting a blank screen and it then just sits there until I remove the battery to power down. I have tried the F8? menu for system restore etc and that hasn't worked either. The hard disk is fine as it was transferred to another machine to allow the data to be copied.

There is a moral here (though it's no comfort to the OP, I'm afraid) - don't go anywhere near Comet.

Sounds to me like it's software related. A clean install of Windows will sort it out, especially as you have now backed up your data.
