Daft question re cat "presents"

What do you do with "presents" brought to you by your cat(s)?

Mine went through a phase of bringing in mice and rats, which went straight into the wheelie bin. Now I cant get rid of the stench of them from it. Its collected every 2 weeks, whereas the food bin is collected once a week. My friend reckons I should put them in the food bin but I am not sure about this, so thought I should post on here hoping for some pearls of wisdom!

There is open wasteland behind my house but my worry is that if I fling them over there, she will only bring them back to me!

Cheers

Well I suppose it is no different to putting uneaten bits of meat in the waste bin? I guess your local council is the best person to ask as it depends what they do with the food waste I think. I am so lucky not to have this problem!

I doubt your cat would pick up already dead animals though, so finding a hedge to sling them under (provided it isn't where children play etc.) might be the best option.

I pick them up with newspaper etc & wrap & tightly knot them in a nappy sack (kept especially for 'presents' & emptying ashtrays, as my 'baby' is now 22!). Then they go in the normal, non-recycling bin.

Never noticed a problem so far.

  • Cats don't usually eat carrion so she probably won't bring them back. Dead rats will have a lot more bacteria than butcher meat so will decomopose more quickly, hence the smell. Pest control places usually put dead things in bags in a freezer until they can be collected for incineration. Perhaps you could freeze them and then put them frozen in the bin on bin day.

Use a special coloured tupperware for the dead things

  • Love it Owain - reminds me of the day my one of my daughter's pet rats died. She didn't want to leave him in the cage in case his brother ate him and she hadn't time to bury him before she went to work. She put him in the fridge in a Tupperware and said she would deal with him when she got home. I then had to phone Mr P who was due home for lunch and warn him that there was a dead rat in the fridge. Happy days!

Years before our lovely hamster died during a cold snap - he went in the freezer until the ground thawed and we could bury him.

    What else can you do?

If you could find someone with a pet snake they might take the rats and mice off you with gratitude .

At least rats and mice don't leave feathers everywhere - you want to see the mess after a rather large pigeon was eaten, feathers everywhere, that was last summer and we are still finding feathers - worse than Christmas Tree needles.:)

My cats hate specific cat toys; they are more happy with balls of paper and shoe laces.

Presents tend to be edible because of this; or cat beds.
