Barclaycard Initial Limit Increases ?

Options
My wife has a LTSB Amex Duo credit card with a £2600 limit, this is paid in full each month by DD from our LTSB Account.

She applied for a Barclaycard Initial as she liked the 1% reward offers, but has been given a limit of only £400. This will also be set up to be paid in full each month by DD but do they ever increase the limits and if so how often ?.

Only plan on using it to by petrol at shell for the rewards so the £400 would last the month, and use the Amex for everything else and get the Airmiles.

Comments

  • Barclay card will increase the limit on 6 month reviews and give you the option to reject it.

As a card holder you can request a higher limit via the user website, this is usually approved if the increments are small and steady.
Marry a Foreigner, its so much cheaper!
  • Don't bank on it - I've had a Barclaycard Initial for 2 years with a limit of just £260 and have a DD set up for the full amount. I've never been offered an increase and also had an increase request turned down. I have since got cards from other lenders with larger limits (£5k+) so I'm guessing Barclaycard just don't see me as profitable as I pay in full. The irony is that with a limit so small I'm never going to be unable to repay the balance in full so they will never stand a chance of making any money out of me.

I have a Barclaycard Initial with a starting limit of £1500 since May 2009, I got an automatic increase after six months to £2500 and phoned a few months after this and requested an apr reduction, this was decreased from 29.9% to 19.9%. I phoned in May 2010 and requested an upgrade to the Platinum card, I been told to call back in November.

    Err...the Barclaycard freedom stuff?

That is not exclusive just to the Initial so i hope she didn't go for that card, just for the sole reason of something that is available with all Barclaycards.

And seeing as she has an Airmiles account (unless something has happened since she got it) she stands a significant chance of getting a more mainstream card with similar or better rewards.

Interesting, i didnt realize it was automatic.

My wife has had the Goldfish card for a year (not used much mind you) but never been offered an increase.

It isn't automatic. They will periodically review accounts and increase or decrease limits as they see fit (and of course you can opt out), but it's not automatically increased every few months.

If you want an increase, try ringing and asking, but be warned they can only review your limit once every 3-6 months.
