:rotfl: If my business partner was reading this now he would crack up laughing and tell you exactly how volatile I can be, his pet name for me is Monkey as I look cute but can be quite scarey - my husband says I can argue with my own shadow and my dad used to say I'm only ever happy when in a "heated discussion" - I doubt I'll ever change, I dont have too many friends consequently - as most people misunderstand me, but I never hold grudges! Thanks for the compliment! ;)

I would be interested in more details about the 0800 number and the landline tarriff etc as my landline phone bill is ridiculously high at the moment.

I also use my mobile for calling 0870 numbers as I get 1000 inclusive minutes on a pretty good dual phone vodafone contract which also includes a separate sim for my 3g data card giving me mobile broadband at 1/2 meg on my laptop. Amazing what you can negotiate with mobile providers if you try. I have had contracts with them for over 5 years now and find them excellent.

My 0800 number ( http://www.global-telecom.co.uk/ ) is not the absolute cheapest anymore , but service is good and moving could be an issue , , the likes of http://www.call08.com/pricing.php seem better prices

as far as outgoing calls are concerned , a number ways are available such as 18866/ vonage / VOIP if you use all your inclusive minutes , also home phone packages for those business calls in the evening - or the T mobile 3000 min pm to landlines peak times at £17.63pm

take a look the telephone board

Do Vodafone give your 0870 inclusive ??? .. they stopped mine years ago, hence moved to o2.
The T Mobile walk&WebPro looks good deal for 3G data

  • I have a business model and presentation style that works for me and has been very successful to date. I merely trust in the style of my presentation and the knowledge I can impart to the client. That said I do feel that not enough sharing of 'best practice' takes place in this industry. After all no-one has the monopoly on good ideas.

This is one thing I found Andrew, when I first entered this industry nobody would train me in sales techniques nor spare the time to demonstrate certain tactics or help me with which lender was good for what. If it wasn't for you helping me out when you did I would have been stuffed and ended up as one of those brokers who leaves the industry due to lack of business/experience. I've since passed on some of the useful information you've given me to two other less experienced brokers and it makes me feel good now to be able to help people out - I think some brokers see the competition as so fierce that they guard their methods and secrets like the crown jewels.

I've got a 3g datacard, got it free with my acer notebook, I'd advise anyone who buys one to be very careful using it, as its difficult to work out how much you have spent. My last bill was £287 - from using the bloody thing when I was on holiday in GY

  • Maybe it's just me - but there's almost two (virtually connecting) debates running on the thread at the same time.

Making contact with several brokers is not a bad thing - after all why should any customer buy a product, from white goods through to a mortgage, from the first place he goes to? However - and this is not MSEing to a degree - part of buying a product involves considering the service you receive. For example, would you get car insurance from a company you've never heard of just because they can undercut your current provider? Or buy an investment product that promises spectacular results from an unknown investment firm?

So, when we consider using multiple brokers to secure the best possible mortgage, part of the actions of a customer should be focusing on "can I work with this broker?" If the answer is no then walk away! I would contend that this relationship (between broker and client) has to be good - otherwise there will only be friction if the broker has to say "I think you're overstretching yourself".

I've never had to use a broker - yet! However, I would imagine that having several brokers looking for products would only lead to difficult decisions. How do I choose between 3-4 "best mortgage for me"? House buying seems to have enough stress - why add more! :D

However, as a footnote to all this, Martin's (and indeed MSE's) philosophy is one of "get one over the companies that screw you over". Unless you've used a small broker firm (or a one-man-band operation) - how have they got one over you? Note that this is not a 'support the little guy' arguement - if the service is not good enough, if the advice being offered is poor, the he/she doesn't get any customers! If the broker is good and get's lots of recommendations then he/she does well. That's just business. However, generally speaking - and I know that there will be exceptions - a small business is more likely to offer a personal service; something that I would imagine is important when shopping for a broker.

Yeah its a vodaphone, but I didnt sign up for a monthly contract as to be honest I wouldn't use it that much, it was really just because at the time I was away from home a lot on business and didn't like to leave things until I got back.

I went on pay as you go, otherwise known as pay through the nose

In fact, I'm going to ditch the card completey and just use wi-fi hotspots, does anyone know if you can give them to someone who just registers the credit contract in their own name for that card?

They do but I had to agree to an 18 month contract on both my mobiles and my 3g datacard sim. They would also only agree to it if I took the 1000 inclusive minute option on one of my phones. Took an awful lot of negotiating but I managed to get the whole lot as a package.

It was the customer retention team that did it though as I told the normal contract team that I was going to move elsewhere. What is surprising is that my brother who had also been with them for years could not negotiate a similar deal. It is amazing how 'tailored' these packages can be these days if you have the cheeck to ask.

Not only that I like the phone, a nokia N70 which I have tomtom5 installed on which I use in the car via bluetooth gps receiver. The second phone is a Razr which my other half uses.
  • Ah well if anyone wants it without the sim they can have it, its a rip off I won't be using it again! Im not very good with technology even when its explained I don't understand it
