building near a drainage cover???

We are beginning to reconsider selling our house and putting an extension up at the rear of the house, but the question is, can we build over a drainage cover?
I seem to remember reading somewhere that you can't build within so many feet of them, so would we have to resite the drain (which is the main drain coming from neighbours etc, and continuing into other neighbours and beyond) or stay the pprescribed distance from the said drain??

You can build over the drain, but you still have to be able to access the manhole. If the other manholes are nearby, it's likely you'll be able to rod through under the extension from those anyway without ever having to use yours again. You can cover it with carpet etc.

We had an extension built and had to do this. It was in the bathroom, so we bought a special lid which we could tile seperately and then grouted it in amongst the other tiles. Sounds rubbish, but it was virtually invisible and building regs were still happy that it could be lifted if need be.

I'd speak to one of the building control officers at your local council.
