Coast2Coast Cycle Ride-Any Info Please?

Options
Hi everyone,

If there is a thread on the Coast2Coast I would welcome to be re-directed?

We have agreed to do the Coast2Coast for a charity ride and have decided on the "Whitehaven to Sunderland" route. If anyone has done this route could they help us with the following points please:

1. One of our bikes is a road racer with thin wheels. Will this be ok on this route as we only want hard standing routes not off-road? The route we have been looking at appears main road, minor road, no traffic but all showing tarmac roads?

2. It looks like we are taking "route 7" and wish to purchase a map from Sustrans website. Is this the correct map?

We would welcome any other advise as even if we have it covered it is better to know twice than not at all so please feel free to throw any help into the pot!

Thanks for now and sorry if this is a thread which is posted on a regular basis.

yes, the route is more or less decent tarmac, but it is rough around the edges. skinny tyres will help with speed, but they are more liable to punctures, so be prepared for changes, or buy a slightly nobblier tyre

west to east, is the best way to ride the route - havent looked a the sustans maps. i just got a map out, and worked out the route that suited my accommodation needs the best

how long are you planning on doing the trip in?

Thin tyres involve much less work and, in my experience, on tarmac and fine gravel do not puncture more often than fat tyres, if you keep them pumped up to the correct pressure.
  • Thanks for the help everyone. We are not planning any "speed racing"!!!! Just a straight forward stretch of around 40-50 miles so we can enjoy the scenery (hopefully!!)
