Just wondering what documentation I need to take with me to buy a car.

I am planning to trade my current car in. I was going to wait till I had saved up the money for a car so sent off my V5 and both parts of my driving license to change the address (recently moved house). However i have seen a car I like and my dad said he would lend me the money if I want to trade my car in and get this one.

So do I have to wait for both Driving license and V5 to come back before I can go and look at/buy the car. I sent the driving license of around a week after the V5 as couldn't find my paper counterpart straight away.

Do I need my driving license with me to go and by a car from a trader?

I know there is a chance the license could come at around the same time or even before the V5 but if not will I have to wait for it to come before I get a car?

If the car I've seen gets sold before I can buy it its not the end of the world I can just look for another one but just wondering where I'd stand

ETA when I bought this car it was from a small company, I bought it outright without part exchanging as I had no car at the time, and can't remember if I had to show driving license (it was a fair few years ago now!!)
:AWhatever it is - I didn't do it!:A

The dealer will want to see your license if you intend taking it for a Test Drive.

You will need the V5 if you intend PX'ing the car and probably a couple more proofs of ID if you intend financing the car.

The dealer does not need to see V5, you can sell it without.

not getting finance, only about £1500 pre P/X, I knew about need the V5 for P/Xing I have driven the car model before and liked it so In theory my Dad could test drive with his license as he would be more aware of what to look for lol

But surely that would greatly reduce the price I get for it!!??!!

Would it be worth asking the company what documents you need to bring?

Was looking for a general answer as like I said if this one sells tomorrow I would have to look for another car with another trader and if is up to the individual one person might want to see it all and another might not be bothered IYSWIM :)

You could place a deposit on the car and complete the sale once your V5 is back - doubt they'll want to see your licence.

I would go and see the car and explain your circumstances then they'll tell you whether they will do the deal without the V5.
