    Have you considered this: http://www.multimac.co.uk/car_seats

They are very expensive but definitely a lot cheaper than a new car! Up to 4 kids, baby to 12 years old, in the back of a car. If it helps to rationalise the cost, remember you're looking at at least 3 "regular" car seats per child (group 0+, group 1, group 2/3) over the course of their lives so 3 kids would be at least 12 car seats instead of 1 Multimac car seat (plus accessories).

I only have 2 kids but if I had a third then it would be tempting to me.

    We had this problem;

2 children under 5 and a baby on the way.

We started to look for a new car (rather than our current VW Passat) and found ourselves at the local Volvo dealer.

It turns out that their child seats are very narrow-framed and we now fit 2 of their seats plus one full-width baby seat in the rear of the VW - it saved us from changing the car and as a bonus, the rear of the Volvo seat comes off when the older kids are the right age & size to just use a booster seat.

Pop into your Volvo dealer to check them out - ours was perhaos a little miffed that we saved £'000s on buying a car by spending iro £120 on a pair of childseats!

They are easy to use, normal width inside but narrow frame outside.

I didn't think you could have children in car seats in the front, apart from the newborn one and then only if you disable the airbag, although its been a few years since i needed a seat for DS

    Thanks everyone.

GFH/pinkclouds - budget wise we only have about £500 maybe even less so the multimac is out but we did consider it.

Muppet - they can in the correct child seat http://www.childcarseats.org.uk/law/index.htm

  • Don't forget if you have a child over 4 then a good option for a small booster seat is the bubblebum. They recently sold them in my local asda for £25!

Google bubblebum to see one - its about 30-33cm wide from memory!

We've used one of these with a group 1 and group 2 booster seats in the back of an Ibiza and whilst its a squash, its safe!

Having the 7 year old in the front with his booster is no good, as there's no room for my OH in between the other 2 car seats. But we can just about do it with the 18 month old in the front.

The Picasso has 3 individual seats in the back and can take all 3 kids in their respective seats :-) Fortunately the 7 year old isn't far away from not needing his booster anymore as well, which is handy.

I thought they had to be a certain height and/or 10 something years old ? to no longer need a booster.

We have a Picasso and can comfortably fit 2 boosters and a wide bummed mum ;) in the middle, they are a true 3 seats wide along the back.

Children over 135cm (just over 4'5") tall do not need a booster seat - no matter their age.

Children 12 and over do not need a booster seat - no matter their height.

A Britax Eclipse is supposed to be narrow for smaller cars. We have 3 (for my car, OH's car and my Mum's car) and they are great car seats. Not too expensive.
