Damage to Kitchen Units which are now discontinued

Hi

I have noticed that the pelmet on the bottom of my wall cupboard is melted probably from having a toaster underneath. I have always used a toaster on my worktops without problems before! I have made enquiries about replacing this pelmet as we are putting the house on the market and want to sell it with a kitchen in perfect condition and find that our 5 year old kitchen is discontinued. I have done more research and the company that manufactured my kitchen has ceased trading. What do I do? I cannot expect an insurance company to pay for a new kitchen but wonder what would happen had say a door been badly damaged. Just what could I expect an insurance company to do regarding the pelmet that I cannot get hold of now?

Any suggestions?

Maggie

The first question is whether the type of damage you describe would even be covered under your policy. One basic test for an insured event is whether the occurrence causing the damage was "sudden and accidental". Your situation sounds like it has been happening over a period of time. (In the old days the claim would have been tossed out because there was no "flame" involved!)

And nothing the industry tries do to us surprises me any more!

I agree, unlikely to be covered. The only chance you might have would be if you could convince the Insurers it was a 'one off' accident event that caused the damage. If you describe the cause of the damage as you have in your post, I doubt the claim would get any further than the first phone call.

As an aside, the quality of the material used to manufacture the kitchen must be questionable or you have an industrial sized toaster.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.
