Self Employment?

I got into debt a few years ago when I was made redundant and had to take a poor paying job just to keep going.
I'm gradually paying my way out of it (A few years to go yet though)
At the age of 54 I've had enough of being chucked out of work every 12 months (I work in the engineering sector, which is in decline)
I've decided to work for myself but can't think of anything that isn't too physical, and that dosn't cost too much to start up.
Is there anybody of a similar age that has started any kind of business that I could consider?

Tony

What sort of skills do you have? What type of work have you done in the past?

  • Hi Mark
In the past I've run a pub,a newsagents and even a sandwich delivery round, so I know about the business side of things, tax etc.
I'm good at organising, but for the past 12 years have worked as a fabricator/welder, which I hate.
I'm looking for something totally different from what I've done in the past.
I've been thinking about a Letting Agency/Property Management business. Franchises are out of the question due to the high cost.

Difficult to offer much tangible advice without knowing a lot more about you (attitude to risk, financial resources etc). As a thought, have you considered anything like being an agent for the Book People (delivering books to workplaces and collecting orders)?

  • Don't want to risk too much. Couple of grand maybe.I had looked at carpet cleaning, but I don't want all the physical work anymore.
There are two people near me doing the book delivery business. Ones doing ok, but the other one says he's struggling.
