how to show icons on desktop help pls

hi everyone,
My BF has recently been given a pc off his granda, I've managed to remove magnifier etc but i cant for the life of me figure out how to get icons on his desktop (its just blank with a taskbar) can anyone help please?

sorry its just the programme icons he wants on, you know like firefox, msn, etc0

anyone? its been driving me mad all day0

search for *.lnk, and copy the required ones to the desktop
or right click on desktop, new shortcut, and point to the program.!!
