HELP...Lost whole client database at work

I am with woo on this, copying the files off and reinstalling the application softward then make another copy and work on those copies, just in case
But it is looking better by the minute
in a few hours it may be a good time to approach the boss and ask him for a few spindles of cd's "purely for backup purposes", doesn't cost a lot
Get a system going where the weekly or daily backup copies are actually held off site in the boss's house or anywhere safe but not in the same office in a cabinet
Then should the absolute worst happen and an office fire occur, your data is safe and you can get back up and running effectively0 -
the file associations will sort themselves out as you install the applications.
you will have to recreate the windows users, but the app users may be stored in the application filesEver stop to think and forget to start again?0 -
Chobra wrote:im just realising this, have logged in as administrator and can see the previous users as well as the files etc. Only thing now is where to begin?
How also will i get the previous usernames back on to the system? Ive gathered its gonna be a long night ahead installing programmes and associating the appropriate files/databases with each program?
first things first COPY and SAVE the DATA off the machine, Make another copy of it, the machine banged in once and could do it again, putting you right back at square one!, now that ain't funny
then reinstall the programs, opening each one up making sure it works ok, I am not a SAGE guru, but the principle is still there.
Is this machine part of a network or a standalone PC?
if it is part of a nework you will need to recreate profiles by logging in and dragging profiles from servers PLEASE tell me it is a standalone!!! PLEASE
are you happy with creating new users on a win2k machine?
Once it is all reinstalled, then log in firstly as the old users and see if that does it, if ok bingo knock off and have a celecratory beer
if not then create a new user account and log in with that, opening and checking the programes work, they should do if installed ok
try that first
Good Luck0 -
Thats brilliant, thanks again for all your help. Dont think the boss will be too fussed seeing as its my old man. Now finding all the cd's to install each and every application, so much for post work beers tonight.0

Exactly. Copy all the data files onto backup (which you do normally anyway right!). Then you can do whatever you like to the machine.
Really you should format two drives (windows installation disc gives you options to do this), one for programs, one for data.Happy chappy0
