Hi
How can I promote my website and get traffic to it? I have seen loads of sites that say you get X amount of visitors but at cost.
Can anybody suggest anything?

Google "SEO definition" or look up Wikipedia, and;
"Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the visibility of a web site or a web page in search engines via the "natural" or un-paid ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. Other forms of search engine marketing (SEM) target paid listings. In general, the earlier (or higher on the page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a web site web presence."
Do you want to bring more visitors to your site for commercial reasons? If so, then get your web address (URL) on all your advertisements, flyers, promotional material, business cards etc.
If your business uses vehicles, get your web address on those vehicles to use them as mobile billboards.
If you're willing to pay to get traffic, then go to google and read up on their 'sponsored listing' offering - adwords0 -

Googler has explained it, but it's really hard to tell someone why their website isn't getting traffic without seeing their website.
For example it may be something simple like the fact that you have not given your html pages the correct titles. This means when I google for your particular service in your area, it doesn't turn up in the first two pages of the search. However you need to bearing in mind most people only look at page one of search results.
If you google for "Search Engine Optimization" there are lots of articles on simple things you can do to improve your own rankings without paying out any money.
There are other things you can do which again some of which has been suggested by googler, but depending on what your business is it may or may not be worth spending a lot of time doing it.
For example it's not worth my local greengrocers and newsagent having a website with lots of detail as they rely mainly on footfall due to their great location in the road. There as the art shop has to have a website as less people need art.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

It is strange to think that you have gone to the effort of creating a website without including SEO into the concept. Or is it one of those affiliate/pyramid marketing based ones?0
