Potential Broadband Speed

Hello!

I have been on Supanet 2mb service for a while, and I have just upgraded to their 8mb service. When I check my speed with adslguide it comes up as 1.9mb, so I was wondering if my line could only cope with 2mb max, or if I should be able to get 8mb. Is there any way of testing/ finding out the maximum speed of my line?

Cheers!

  • I have just gone into my netgear router and the test page states:

    Modem
    ADSL Firmware Version 3.02.06.00
    Modem Status Connected
    DownStream Connection Speed 8128 kbps
    UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps

So what should I believe - the 8128 kbps (which I assume is 8.128 mb) from the router, or the 1.9 mb from adslguide?
  • 8128 is the speed at which your router syncs with the phone exchange.. when synced at this speed a therorectical max download speed of 7.15 is possible..

how long has it been since the line was upped to 8mb, as it takes 10days training for the line to stabilise at a good and stable speed where it doesnt drop connection.. if still within the 10 days then just hang around and see what happens.. if after the 10 days its still at 1.9 then it could be a stuck BRAS profile and i would get onto ya ISP about it

Thanks for that - I tried clicking your thanks but it won't let me! I only upgraded today so I will give it a couple of weeks - I didn't realise I had to wait!
  • Had similar experience immediately after 10 day stabilisation period after migrating to ADSL max new ISP provider.
There is a strong possibility that your BRAS profile is stuck. I experienced similar. A call to my ISP support and it was sorted within 24 hours.
dont confuse me with facts I need to think here!!!!
  • oh right - if u migrated today speeds will vary for a while but should stabilise

  • You could also try another speed test site, as the ADSLguide one sometimes gives me a VERY low reading, whereas other sites give me a reading more akin to my max speed ( only512K, cos I'm so far from the exchange  )

Here's a good one, as it shows you upstream too:

and the latest BT speedtester will show your BRAS rate too:

I wouldn't worry too much about the speed at this stage. You have to be patient with "Max"

Try the BT tester though as it will prove if your profile is still at 2 Meg. It's likely that you will see a speed increase after 3 days.

You must have good line stats to sync at 8 Meg from day 1 anyway :)
This site has saved me a fortune :money: ...it's also cost me a fortune!

It all depends if your local BT exchange can handle 8mb if it cant then you will be 'stuck' at its limit.
