When my boiler broke (emptied it's contents on to the floor) it was winter. The best investment I made until it was fixed, was a bottle of wine and a packet of biscuits for some friends down the road who let me borrow their shower and stay until my hair was dry.0

I'm with BG on their £11 p/m insurance plan, and they come out next day to fix any problem.
IIRC, you don't have to be on the scheme, and they will also come out next day for a "one-off" charge for any amount parts and labour and guarantee a fix.
If companies are on "the holidays" then they don't want the work0 -
get a hose pipe and talk nicely to your neighbour0

one kettle full for a stand up shower and 2 for a shower and hair wash! Use a bucket and a jug and just wet your cloth/scrubby thing and add the shower gel.
We used this method for over 2 weeks last winter when our back boiler burst! You will be surprised just how refreshing it can be.Mags - who loves shopping0 -
When I was very unwell a while ago (and was subsequently in financial hardship) I managed for over a year with no hot water or heating because my boiler broke down. It was horrible but I got used to it. Luckily I had an electric shower so I had hot water to wash myself with. I think the worst thing was trying to do the washing up because I had to wait for the kettle to boil several times to fill the sink! I now have a really good boiler, but I must say the whole experience made me realise how lucky we are here in the western world and I don't take luxuries like hot water and heating for granted any more!0
