Someone at work pointed me to a similar iPhone app - WhatsApp. It does cost 59p but once you've paid that you can message other users of the same app photos, text, etc, for free. Obviously if you're in an iPhone type tariff the data allowance is paid for which this use comes out of. It's also available for other platforms. http://www.whatsapp.com/

Obviously unlike the method outlined in this thread the messages it sends can only be sent between users of the app, it doesn't convert or translate them into standard MMS/SMS.

I have this app on my iphone and use it to message my daughter who has a blackberry on Orange. HTH

I'm going abroad shortly and was looking at this app for my iPhone so I could text home whilst I was away (Tesco charges 10p per text when you're on pay monthly). Fishtext does say that it uses a data connection when using the app which would probably work out more expensive for me being charged for data usage.

if u use wifi then it shud not be a problem,..
make sure u turn off data roaming and cellular data (under network settings)

I used to use the (paid-for) VIP text-via-Web service from Cardboardfish/CBFSMS, the company that offers the Fishtext app; although mostly fine, I found that it wasn't 100% reliable, and a few texts weren't delivered, so I personally wouldn't use such a service for 'mission-critical' texts.

But I'd be happy to hear that the reliability has improved...

Have been using this for over a year now, and it's predecessor vip.cardboardfish. never let me down, Send SMS from phone or computer. I work in Libya and use this service daily. If you are based overseas you can also buy a Pseudo UK phone number for replies :T

You can use this program if you can download applications to your phone. But you will need to use data allowance to run the program. If you are on PAYG then will need to see how much using mobile internet would be per day to see if is more cost efficient.

I am on PAYG but I prefer to use Fishtext on my computer as I am quicker at typing then texting. Plus no web access to pay for.

My friend is on Dolphin - you also get free internet access along with your 300 texts. If you go over your 300 text allowance then it might be worth getting the Fishtext application as a back up. You would only pay 2p per text compared to I guess 10p you would pay for Orange? Just as you do not go over the 50mb data usage per month (just read their T&Cs)
