Halifax Home Insurance - Wii Remote Claim

Right I have accidental cover on my Halifax home insurance.
On Thursday a Wii Remote flew from hand & destroyed my 40" inch LCD Samsung TV. No smashed screen but now there are coloured lines all down it. I now know this to be a write off.
I have never ever made a claim on my Home Insurance so I don't know how to approach this.
Am I best being honest and admitting to what happened?
Or saying it was dropped when moving it?
I'm just nervous that with it being a wii remote they wont cover it?
Also if they do accept the claim how do I get a new TV?!
Any advice would be great . . .

I would never recommend lying about a claim, the chances of being found out are a lot higher than you would expect especially with an Insurer with as robust a claims process as Halifax.0

Your right. Ive never been dishonest about anything and my instinct would be to be upfront.
But on the flip side I know Insurance Company's will not want to pay up where they can.
I have never claimed in 5 years and although it was a careless accident to make I feel I should be covered for it.
Has anyone ever made a similar claim with Halifax?
I have read a similar thread about Aviva where they dint pay but I know each company is different.
And there is nothing conclusive in there t's & c's.0 -
Would have thought they would decline due to the fact that when you turn the Wii on there is a warning about making sure that you attach the wrist strap to avoid such accidents. Not having a dig but can see that as a way out for them. Also being bank hol weekend there are some cracking deals on 42 " HD's around the £350 mark. If I were you I would just get one of these, prob cheaper in the long run when you factor in your insurance excess and future rise in premiums due to claim0

Is it really worth claiming for ???
Have you an excess & how much is that ???
Don't forget that even if you paid £1000 for the TV you will probably only get paid out maybe £400.0 -
Jps29,
The wii remote was strapped to the wrist however, the battery cover flipped out and one of the battery's hit the screen. But I suppose that is hard to validate.
Your right though about weekend deals but my excess is £100 so if I can get a claim accepted I would prefer to try that.0 -
Mervyn,
Excess is £100 and paid about £550 for it.
I'm ust totally clueless when it comes to Insurance as I have never had to claim on anything before.0 -
As JPS29 says you would probably be better leaving your insurance out of it.
Your excess is £100 so you will have to pay the first £100 of any claim.
ie Insurance says they will pay £500 for the TV then they will deduct your excess of £100 so your cheque will be £400.
I would have a look at the price of the TV now to be honest.
I know you have insurance but my view is now & always has been.....its for the time when I want to make a claim for several thousands not several hundreds........but thats my view only.0 -
My house insurance is a couple of hundred pounds, so it would be well worth putting in a claim for £400 for me anyway.0

By Sunday, this has been replaced with:The wii remote was strapped to the wrist however, the battery cover flipped out and one of the battery's hit the screen. But I suppose that is hard to validate.
If you going to claim, best have just one story and stick to it!0
