  • As far as the OU is concerned - you apply for the course and in the payment section you state that you are applying for support.

I'd highly recommend the 'Open' degree. That way you can mix and match all sorts of disparate subjects as long as you end up with enough points at the various levels and you dont get stuck with any boring modules as you may do if you aim at the normal sort of degree. I've done modules ranging from teaching maths and social justice to AI and robotics.

Hi as another above have stated try learn direct I think they are free to everybody who is going to study maths or english. Due to the way in which learn direct works and the fact that you can do mostr of it away from the centre the chances are that you will complete it much quciker than taking the GCSE route. I have just done the learn direct maths and it took me about 4 months although it can be completed quicker than that. good luck!

Thank you very much, if all else fails then this is going to be my final resort. lol
  • Hmmmm just looked through their courses. They don't have GCSE's, looks like they only offer courses for grown up kids.

Just like me and 1000s of others then:o[/QUOTE]

I'm thinking of doing the Certificate of Social Sciences In Higher education to begin with, as "The skills translate very well into the modern workplace" . lol Yes there are many advantages of doing an open degree and you you're not left with a huge loan, Ahh sounds pretty cool! What degree have you achieved/are working towards??

One thing which I'm disappointed with myself is that it's now too late to apply for financial support for courses beginning in October. The earliest the next courses begin is in November. but this means that I will finish the certificate all the way into next October. Well done me! :j

No lol there's no way I will ever in my life join a place like the job center. lol I will phone the college up after the bank holiday, if I can't get it for free then I'll just have to sort out a way to pay them in installments or something.

It's up to you. If you were claiming means tested JSA you would not only get the money but probably also your fees paid.

The thing I'm afraid with JSA, is I'm meant to be looking for a job everyday and then they will end up putting me on a rubbish job? How does JSA work? Thanks

    Edit

Filled in the JSA online application now to wait for a phone call back in the next 2 days to arrange interview, I'm a walking contradiction. lol
  • I ended up missing the GCSE deadlines so I went and signed onto the Learndirect courses which were free to me and I passed both Adult Literacy and Adult Numeracy at Level 2 in under 2 months, if only I knew about this before! I also signed onto JSA which isn't as bad as I thought it would be! Been applying for jobs but still no luck.

Now I have some more options, I will apply for university and if I don't find any jobs I will go to uni in 10 months time. Thanks all for your help
