strange cold call after installing MS fix it center

Options
A friendly chap with a strong Indian accent claiming to be from Microsoft just rang me saying my web browser is running slowly and freezing up. He was called Peter and said my ISP had reported the matter. He then promised that in future there would be no need “to take my computer to the market anymore”. I asked who my ISP was and he said he was unable to see certain details for security reasons, to which I replied that I too was constrained by security and would therefore be unable to divulge information about my operating system to an unknown cold-caller. I then asked for a number I could call him back on and was given 0203 318 0526.
The funny thing is my Dell desktop machine does keep freezing up. I was doing research on how to fix it only yesterday and downloaded Microsoft Fix it Center.
Anyone think there could be a link? I’m just a bit confused about how this guy got my number and possibly knew I was having PC problems.

  • I wish "Microsoft" called me up at work and helped with the 80 odd server issues we have!:rotfl:

I'd ignore it. I'd also download Malwarebytes and Avira (uninstall your current anti virus if you have one), update both, then scan with both, then post the logs back here.

Its probably just coincidence - there is a scam going around where they try to get access to your machine and then claim they can see all sorts of problems so they ask for your credit card details to charge you £80 to fix it. Happened to a work colleague who was gullible enough to fall for it, and not so happy the next day when we advised her to cancel her credit card and get her laptop checked out for spyware.

If he wanted to tell you the name of your ISP then this will probably tell him:

After reading the forum here for a while, isn't a freezing Windows PC the norm? ;) So if you randomly call somebody chances are quite high that this person has some kind of problem...

Tell him you're running Mac OS X or Ubuntu...
