Thank you, you've put into words what I was thinking but didn't want to be seen as trying to made HP pay for a repair they'd obviously not done to standard. The links are very useful, there are a surprising amount of people with a similar problem which may indicate an error/design fault in this model. I'll get in touch with HP in the morning.
