Its about helping people get their entitlement! Not about benefits policy!
This board is here for help and support for those on or looking to claim benefits, not for judgement.

you can apply for surestart before you have tax credit award. the surestart forms only asks for yur NI number not for proof of award.

No honestly how hard can it be really? All the time I worked in CAB as a benefit advisor and every day you'd get someone in who hadn't got the right forms, hadn't read the booklet and filled the forms in properly, didn't actually meet the criteria for the benefit that they'd got knocked back for and wanted to appeal the decision.
Are you honestly telling me that you'd never heard of child tax credits before? If so what bubble were you in for the last 5 years?
I wouldn't have started the retrospective crap if you'd just come on and said "I'm a new mum, sent off tax credit stuff asap but it's taken so long I might lost out on surestart, is there anything I can do?" but no, you come on and blame the system because it's a shambles, because they should know that you're on less money because you've just had a baby, just moved house etc. That shambles of a system deals with thousands of forms every year for all sorts of circumstances up and down the country, and it will eventually cough up an amount of money to cover you at least until your baby is 1 and you'll get a lump sum of back pay in your bank at some point.
It may be possible to go to a tax centre with your income details to hurry the process along a bit, or you could speak to your midwife and ask how to get an extension on the surestart deadline but to come on and mouth off about the system being a shambles is pretty out of order even if you haven't claimed since you were 15.0

Aaarghh! Im so annoyed at the Tax credit system.
 1. You cant get through to people when you ring the number provided and when you do, youre charged to be kept on hold and then cut off!
 2. You finally get through to discover that they still havent processed your claim (I put it in middle of July).
 3. You then find out that when they send you your reward, it will be incorrect as it doesnt take into consideration the fact that you are on maternity leave. Therefore, the reward will be wrong.
 4. So then you have to contact them AFTER recieving the award to update your details - you cant do it before recieving the first one.
 5. You are then told that it will take ANOTHER 30 days+ for the new details to be processed!
Because of this farce I cannot apply for the Surestart grant as you need to recieve a tax creds award. I have until september 10th before the deadline ends for my daughter.
I am unbelievably upset, angry and appalled at the cra@ppy system we have in this country. Has anyone else had a similar problem, if so, what did you do about it?
call surestart tell them that you have applied for CTC but it was a fail because they got things wrong (it not your fault they got it wrong) they will be able to pay you because you HAVE claimed and ARE on the CTC system. at very least they will be able to give you a extension if they want to wait untill mistake is clarified. but should pay you because you have an AWARD all beit a wrong one.
next year on renewal at the end of april get all you income details to hand for 2010-2011 call them and renew over the phone its quicker and saves a whole lotta hastle.0

But they would need the details of the CTc award - you need to be getting more than £1090 per year to qualify.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

            hmmmm, yes.
Oh my, did she really write all those blas?!
All Im going to do is ring up the Jobcentre/surestart people on Tues and see what they say. If theres nothing they can do I will put in another application just before the deadline and then when they reply to say I havent been awarded I will have 30 days to play with to appeal- lets hope the TC people can sort my claim by then.
Thanks to those who were kind and supportive in their response. Im guessing your jobs havent made you bitter about the people who need support in this country.
