Applecare IS a good idea if you are particularly clumsy or your apple product has a lot of important things on it (documents etc), as it covers you for spillages, drops, being sat-on... basically accidental damage that is the fault of the consumer rather than Apple. As there are so few people who CAN fix an apple product, the repairs are expensive enough to make the warranty more financially sensible than that of a product by any other make.

Thats completely and utterly wrong, it doesn't cover accidental damage at all. I suggest you read the terms and conditions found here: http://www.apple.com/legal/applecare/appgeos.html.

AppleCare only covers you for the same things you are covered for in the first year (manufacturing defects) but extended to 2 years and with 2 years phone support rather than 90 days.

Well when I accidentally dropped and then trod on (long story) my ibook and broke the screen they replaced it (the screen that is) free of charge because I had applecare. Don't know if maybe they have changed it since last year, but I just went on what happened to me.

We had both our handsets (3g and 3gs) replaced for this reason.
I think you got unlucky with the O2 shop(s). Ours would quite happily have taken the handsets - the only reason we went direct to Apple was that it was quicker than waiting for O2 to send it to Apple and back.
    My TV is broken!
Edit: refunded £515 for TV 1.5 years out of warranty - thank you Sale of Goods Act! :j
  • Just got my cover for my lovely 4G phone - it now looks like a brick - not that different to the motorola flip 'phone i had 10 years ago !! I love all Apple gear but the new 'phone was a rush job.

I sat at the "Genius Bar" for around 20 minutes last weekend waiting for my appointment to get my earphones sorted and I couldn't believe just how many iPhones were being booked in for repair, or being collected after repair or being replaced.

Probably no more than any other phone. Unlike O2 and Carphone warehouse etc Apple don't have a store in every big city so people have less points of return, hence more people returning to one store.

I really don't like Apple; smug, expensive, closed systems.

Unfortunately I now have to confess that their customer service has been absolutely excellent every time I've dealt with them.
