Gluten Free Help Needed!

Hi

My husband has just been diagnosed with coeliac disease. He's so much better now we've cut gluten out of his diet - a different person!:)

We would appreciate some advice on which are the best gf products on prescription, especially bread and pasta. I know it will be personal preference but a few pointers would be really useful. We don't really know where to begin!:(

Thanks

Liz

I was diagnosed a Coeliac a few months ago and am trying different brands. Some bread products are really dry and horrible. However, I really like the Juvela part baked fibre rolls. You just have to put them in the oven for 10 minutes (I don't usually leave them in this long because they're too crusty) and you can either eat them cold with your usual sandwich filling or eat them nice and warm with a hot filling such as egg or bacon. They're very tasty.

I really wish there was somewhere that people could recommend different products though because Ive just had to try different brands myself and some are horrible!

Sainsburys do a nice part baked baguette too and they also sell mini chocolate chip muffins and blueberry muffins (which aren't Sainsburys own) and are quite nice for a little cake snack.

He can still have rice - so he can have rice cakes instead of crisps.

  • Are you only looking for ready made baked goods or would recipes be useful as well?

I thought most crisps were ok. The Walkers ones we've got say gluten free.

To be honest I'm not much good at baking, but maybe I'll have to learn!
Really We're looking for ready made products at the moment. I've got a list of products available on prescription but don't know what to try.

    Thanks

Check crisp flavourings, as long as they say glutne free you should be OK,but I know a lot of the flavours aren't gluten free. Genius bread is really nice if you can get it

I do it all because I'm scared.
  • A coeliac friend of mine loves the Genius bread and I've made cakes for her using the Dove farm self raising flour. It has xantham gum in it so you can use it just like normal flour.

They're not gluten free! MSG is made from wheat (people with gluten intolerance can't have wheat, too) - I did have Walkers one day and nothing with wheat in - I had a very poorly stomach the next day.

I emailed them and they said that there's no law stating they have to label their food properly.

BTW - skips are gluten free, I believe wotsits are too.

Definately join the coeliac society they have current up to date lists for members regarding everyday shop bought stuff so it'll save a few pennies.

Send off for samples Juvela, glutafin etc all do a sample pack for newly diagnosed and they are very helpful in deciding what to get on prescription as some gp's only allow a certain amount per month

MSG is gluten free. Its made via bacterial fermentation. MSG can make some people ill but it is NOT coeliac related illness.
