I'm sure there are independent operators out there who can test all makes of ECUs and repair or provide exchange units.

Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Camco Automotiv in Warrington re fantastic too! :)
  • Plenty of firms will repair ECUs sent to them through the post, for a fraction of the cost of a new one.

^^ Ive been saying this for years....
Same here, I'll say it about BMW too..........

VW's are now in my opinion some of the least well constructed, and least reliable cars about, they're all image now.

A modern Ford is a much better proposition than a VW build quality, and reliability wise.

Yep. I sent my Astra (X Plate) ECU off to a company called "Bluestreak" when it developed non-running faults. They picked it up, phoned me at 4pm that day to say "it's tested as faulty, do you wish to authosrise a repair?".

I said Yes. £280 and 2 days later I got my ECU back in fine form. They repaired the fault (quad-driver failure), and also replace any "known to fail" components at the same time, and then warranty it.

Can't complain! No problems since. Vauxhall wanted SILLY money and said the parts would be 4 figures.

I used "The ECU Doctor" who replaced a burnt out injector driver on an ECU. Cost £180 ish, had it back a few days later, everything worked fine.
    Happy chappy

We need to put a 'new' ECU into our VW Polo. We have found one independently for a fraction of the cost of one from VW. Can anyone tell me if the car will be driveable when the new unit is fitted, but only the electrics won't work? I understand that only VW can re-programme it, and TBH, if the ignition would work, then we could drive it rather than tow it to the VW garage.
If anyone knows, I would appreciate it. Thank you.

Nonsense, a Ford does not have the same build quality as a VW. I have driven both (MK1 & MK2 Focus) and VWs (Scirocco, MK4, MK5 & MK6 Golf) and the quality is much better in the VW.

Although Ford did do better in the 2010 JD reliabilty survey (not by much), VW still make reliable cars. Ive owned several VWs and never had anything go wrong with them.

I also didn't buy them for image, I bought them because I liked the quality and comfort of them. Also Ford didn't have the same appeal to me knowing they would be worth a fraction of what I paid for it when it comes trade in time.
