Paypal - Halifax and financial loss...

16th september I received an email asking why I was sending the recipient £200 via my paypal account.
Check my paypal account and lo and behold some unathorised activity has taken place, £200 is being transferred from my bank account and due to clear on the 26th of september.
These funds are then being sent to a recipient in the form of an echeque, which is due to clear on the 26th from my paypal account.
I didn't authorise any of this activity, called paypal asked them to cancel the bank transfer and echeque... they can't, only person who can stop it is the recipient, by declining it.. GREAT!
Luckily the recipient declined it, after I asked him to.
As the £200 due out of my account was not there I have suffered a bank charge of £39.
Called paypal and asked them to cover this financial loss, they said its a third party charge and out of their control.
visted my bank manager and queried having the charge stopped. they're not at fault so they won't cancel the charge.
Called paypal again, queried the problem again, still refuse to accept liability.
I asked for their onbidsman details.
Now where do I stand? Any suggestions on what to do next!?
I'm still waiting for paypals "fraud investigation team" to get back to me, this is due to take place on the 25th September. Once the case is closed with paypal I can refer the situation to their onbidsman.

My understanding is that this was the transaction from the Paypal side and this transaction was not authorised by you. I think that the usual procedure for such kind of transactions is that you dispute it with your bank. It is your bank's duty to request the proof from the other side and to sort out everithing including bank charges. If the bank refuses to do this, follow their regular complaints procedure.antonio_king wrote:...Now where do I stand? Any suggestions on what to do next!?...0 -

If the money came out of your Halifax bank account via a direct debit, contact Halifax and invoke the Direct Debit guarantee with them - while I agree this is not Halifax's fault this will ensure you get your money back and no charges.
I would then worry how someone managed to hack into your PayPal account and send the money in the first place!

I received the charge because the money wasn't there to be taken out.
I see your point about the money back guarantee, it wasn't authorised so therefore the money -if it was taken- should be therefore refunded... so if no money was taken then consquently no charges can stand as the terms havn't been met to invoke one!
I'll try this with my bank on monday.0 -
do a fraud report with halifax
if they comes up with a good result they will also refund the £390 -
Well that was easy... i told them that my rights with the direct debit guarentee would mean the charge doesnt stand and they cancelled the charge. woop!0

Now you need to work out how you compromised your paypal account so this doesn't happen again.
I assume you have already changed *all* associated passwords etc. Ask on the techie board for advice about checking your PC for nasty virus or spyware.
Only the user of a paypal account can send money, a third party can request money but they only get it once the person agrees to send it, therefore someone had access to your paypal account. A few of the big banks admit to having been hacked at some point but so far there has been no suggestion that paypal have been, even reading the unmoderated boards where sometimes paypal gets a very bad press there is no real suggestion that they have had any problems. Therefore if your PC comes up clean you either fell for a phishing mail, or had a guessable password or left yourself logged in at some point on a shared PC.
Luckily this time all is well, but it is well worth making sure nothing like this happens again as it could be much much worse.

I am very computer savvy, I work as an it technician.
I never have logged onto paypal on a shared pc. I'd be amazed if they guessed my password.
And my pc is completely up-to-date on protection.
also, i havn't even logged into my paypal account for months!0
