Cat pulling fur out

  • Is your cat very attached to a person in the house and is the cat also left alone often? Our older cat (13) just loves human company and (in her old age) gets really REALLY stressed if she is left 'alone' i.e. no humans (her son is around though so she's not totally alone).

We've tried all sorts but have found that going away for more than one night at a time is just too much for her. If we stay away for two nights, she will pull out hair. We are very fortunate in having an amazing friend that will spend hours with her if we are away, but still, two nights is too much for her.

    Just found this thread.

One of my girls suffers stress anxiety at the least thing and makes herself sore by over-grooming.

The last trigger was being chased by a large cat coupled with me accidentally knocking her off my lap when I reached to turn out a lamp just as she appeared from nowhere to have a cuddle.

I've feliway gong constantly in the house and also give her zylkene every day. These both help to keep her calm.

I discovered by accident that a dose of Metacam helped her heal faster - another cat in the house was being treated with it and my stressed cat sometimes ate from the food bowl the metacam was in. I discussed it with my vet and now have some metacam in the house to give her as soon as she starts damaging her skin from over-grooming. It really helps stop further damage and heals up existing sores quickly. This is a prescription drug though so you MUST see your vet about it.
My first reply was witty and intellectual but I lost it so you got this one instead :D
