  • I don't know Nottingham area but some general advice - check if your employer has a deal with any of the gyms in the area which gives you discounted membership or joining fees.
As joining fees can be steep, ask for a reduced joining fee if you turn up at one for a trial. Some of the large gym chains also seem to offer free one day trial memberships - phone and ask to try before deciding on membership.

I've just noticed there is one called Holmes Place in Nottingham that does a free joining fee for example, no idea if they are any good or what fees or facilities are like but try typing into a search engine for website. I seem to recall which magazine doing a feature on gyms also - you can get a free 30 day online trial from them (which you will have to remember to cancel if you don't want to pay).

    Good luck.

It's all down to that big word " motivation". I have a monthly membership and I average 4 times a week which makes it worth while for me (£20 through work). I 've done this for years and it works for me. You do tend to make that bit more effort when you've already paid for it and I'm a great believer in getting value for money.

I agree, when you pay upfront you try and get your monies worth.

I am now considering joining my local Hotel gym, £35 per month. not too bad i guess.

Anyone had any good/bad experiences of these types of gyms!!

Or am i better of going to a proper gym??

think about joining the local authority gym, this tends to be much cheaper than private gym and the facilities are pretty much the same.

check out how much notice you ahve to give to quit. some are 12 month contracts, mine is a min of 3 months and 2 months notice to quit.

I am more motivated to go because ive paid.

  • another thread has some chat which seemed in keeping with my original reply.

the advice about avoiding high joining fees seems to be in keeping with what has been said here about motivation. The gyms know that most people join post Christmas and stop using them within a matter of weeks but continue paying memberships then take ages to get round to cancelling.
Have you thought of getting a friend to go with you?

The other thread has info about a free trial.
  • my only advice is to go in to them all, get a look around in them and don't rush your decision. Also, haggle. A close relative of mine recently got the price of her membership down from 26 a month, to 19 a month just by asking what they could offer etc

Look on Always panty liner packs, you can get 3 days free for 2 weeks at Fitness First - lets you try out the equipment etc.

If you have a Cannons near you - 2500 Nector points (Sainsburys) gives you 2 people free for a month unlimited use. (can apply for this every other month) Nectar also have weekly deals as well.

Ive just cancelled my membership with Fitness First (no reason other than I struggle for time in Spring/Summer months ) You can join for a 3 month minimum term and they are always doing Free joining fees so check them out.
I will be rejoining in the Winter Months.

Dont forget Walking early in the morning and early evening is also Free, and if you havnt got a dog you could always borrow a neighbours who are at work.
Thanks to everyone who posts comps :T
