It may be a pain (pardon the pun) get a Doctors note (could pay up to £10) and the gym should accept cancellation through ill health. expect 1 month membership in costs but net gain of up to 5 months membership saved. Larger chains such as Fitness First have accepted this in the past.Marry a Foreigner, its so much cheaper!0

The only way you are going to be 100% sure is too read the contract and speak to the gym.
No one here is going to be able to tell you for certain. I would imagine that it will be only certain illnesses and whether they are self inflicted or not.
For instance if the illness is something that is going to last a few months, they might put the contract on hold, or only allow 3 months, then expect you to continue paying. If the illness is because of your neglect they could well say, sorry no, you have to pay.
They could be as light as to say ok, yes you've broke your arm, so we will cancel it for you and charge you nothing. Very unlikely but one of no doubt dozens of potential outcomes.
Do let us know how you get on.0
