Any Norton customers coming up for their annual renewal date consider buying a new disc rather than following through the on-line renewal process.
I have Norton 360 on my 2 computers. With 30 days to my subscription renewal date I start getting reminders to renew. The cost to carry on for another 12 months is £65. PC World are doing Norton internet security (3 computer licence) for £22.99. Amazon for £22.00. Both offer free delivery.
The difference between 360 and Internet Security is negligable. In fact Internet Security does away with the annoying regular back up prompts. This is a plus for me!
I believe the new disc will uninstall the previous product before installing itself, as both are Norton.
Its worth considering if your renewal is due!
Oh and before you want to come on and say Norton is poor and there are other better free, or cheaper alternatives then fine. All I can say is that Norton works well for me. My computers function quickly and never have I had any virus problems. Other people in the same boat can save some money by re-purchasing rather than renewing!
Hope this helps.

I do what the OP suggests myself, another point worth noting is that when Norton bring out NIS2011, existing users can upgrade for free. That gum you like is coming back in style.0

I had Norton on 3 PC's but it slows everything down so much, particularly my laptop that I did away with Norton on them all & went for Microsoft Essentials......& its free.0

lol right too clean out norton 360 you will need the offical norton removal tool first before installing the nis these are different programs and will leave trace elements and more than likely conflict if you do it the way you suggest. removal tool http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080416133836EN
i would remove the norton 360 first then use removal tool then BEFORE installing the new nis run a registry cleaner first such as registry mechanic or ccleaner to tidy that all up first also run some anti-malware like malewarebytes then after running all of those then install you norton internet security. this will help the machine run better overall.0
