Ohh thank you VK.....I'm getting married next August at the Kaim Park (humanist ceremony at the hotel). We love the venue but don't know of anyone who has been married there so it was reassuring to read your post. They have a wedding fayre on there on Sunday so looking forward to that and seeing the place all set up and to hopefully get a few other things sorted from my extremely long "to do" list!!

Did we ever found out where the 7K place was?? Somebody told me that Harburn House (which admittedly does look lovely) was £6k for the use of the grounds/marquee before you even start with the costs of caterers etc but I didn't visit the venue so cannot say if that is 100% true. I didn't go to look as knew it would be way out of my budget and didn't want to fall in love with it knowing I couldn't afford it!!! Would have been handy though as it is literally just down the lane from where my daughter keeps her pony - that would have kept her happy lol!!!

hi, im not in scotland so havent a clue about any places or anything, but i think a late wedding is a lovely idea, if its something your happy with. if however you want the bigger all day affair i wouldnt be put off by the first price some places say, have you ever watched dont tell the bride? on there the guys are always being quoted really high prices, and they barter over it, the other day i think the guy got his venue and all food for 2.5k, and it wasnt a small wedding, original quote was in the region of 6k. Now im not saying every venue would do that, but i reckon there must be some places that you could get for under 4k all in, that itself would work out £50pp, so completely doable. especially if you stand your ground and are prepared to walk away if they wont. If you go for late october, you have a reason to ask for discount because its out of season. then pull their packages apart and see what you can remove. ours wanted £75 per table for crappy decorations - so am doing my own.

  • Hi Monkey- this is a great idea!

    Im going to get married later in the day for these reasons;

    1) I cant afford to feed everyone all day

    2) I need that morning time to prepare the venue/faff with hair, makeup dress etc etc

    3) I am considerate to my guests- i understand they have their own homes and lives and probably dont want to be hanging round my wedding all day. Let them get on with what they need to do (chores/pets/nap/getting ready) then join me full of beans later on

    4) I cant afford to entertain everyone all day- Ive also heard stories of people going to weddings that dragged on and had quiet spells- boring!! Thats not fun for anyone!

    5) Im never full of beans- a whole day of wedding faff would tire me out

So thats why I think its a great idea! :D

Harburn house was indeed in the region of £6k. Looked totally gorgeous but £6k was too much. The 7k place was Hopetoun house I think, or maybe one of the places in East Lothian. We didn't go to see them either, just enquired.

Did think about Kaim Park but OH nixed it because apparently "that's a Hibs place". I have no idea if it is or not and I don't really care, but hey, I guess he has to be happy too. We're going to see the Vu through the week, so I'll report on that later on - they seem to have good wedding packages.

We're also planning on using discounts where we can. My sister gets a discount at some hotels because of her job, and there's a wedding venue I get 15% discount on because I'm an employee.

Sugar_Moon, your reasons for it make sense to me. Add to that the fact that I'm a total lightweight, so if I'm drinking early on, it's guaranteed that I'll either pass out or have a hangover by 9pm.

Have to say, the biggest headache at the moment is finding a venue with a big enough dancefloor for a ceilidh.

God better not let OH see the comment about it being a "Hibs place" bearing in mind he is an Ibrox season ticket holder :rotfl:

Will be interested to see what you think of the Vu.....the setting is stunning and the room where the service is held is pretty special, but I did have reservations on a few other things but I agree their packages were quite reasonable (have also heard their bar prices are very high though...). They are very heavily booked up....when I went a few months ago the only Saturday date they had in 2011 was one Saturday in November and they do hold two weddings each day!! They did seem to have spaces for Sunday weddings though.

Not sure about the size of the dance floor in respect of a ceilidh but how about Houston House (Macdonald hotel) or Deer Park (golf club)??

I've heard that they're pretty much booked up through 2012 for Saturday weddings, and I'm not sure I like the idea of them doing 2 weddings a day.
Both of the options suggested have been discounted by OH because he used to work for one and "knows what goes on there", and he threw up from alcohol in the other one. I'm getting to the stage where I'm asking if he actually wants to get married.

We saw quite a cool venue at the weekend which was a sort of arts centre, where we'd get married in the theatre and the ceremony would take place on the stage, so that's an option. And we're seeing Norton House at the weekend.

I've been helping my friend look for somewhere for an evening reception as shes getting married abroad. Most of the places that sell themslelves as 'wedding' venues have minimum numbers for a seated wedding breakfast.
You may well do better looking for just a 'function' room of a hotel or something somewhere and if its not licensed for a civil ceremony have a humanist one as I think they can do it just about anywhere?

What about one of the university halls in Edinburgh, big and grand enough for the dancing.

The Golden Lion in Stirling has a gorgeous hall and lots of dancing space.
My sisters friend has booked Linlithgow Burgh Halls for October 2011 and they've said it will defo be completed by then. Think shes just bringing her own caterers in.

The only other thing i thought of was a marquee but its quite risky in Scotland!

The Vu wouldn't be big enough for the dancing IMO. I was there recently and it was £4.10 for a lager and lime and £8.60 for 2 vodkas and a can of red bull!
