getting married late in the day

H2B and I are paying for our wedding ourselves. We've not long bought a house so money isn't exactly freely flowing. We don't want a long engagement so we're thinking September/October next year in Scotland, which is where we live.
Anyway I've been horrified by the price of some venues (over £7k before we've even fed anyone or bought a drink), and we're struggling to find a wedding venue on budget that will fit our large number of guests (75+) with room for a ceilidh too (in case you've never been to one a ceilidh is like traditional Scottish dancing with lots of spinning and travelling - apparently it burns over 800 calories an hour - so it needs a bit of space.
We really liked one venue where you can get married overlooking the Forth Bridge, but it was too expensive to feed people and have an evening buffet.
Anyway, we were driving home the other night and there was a gorgeous sunset. We joked about getting married as the sun was setting over the Forth, and then just having a buffet for everyone, saving us a bit of money. I'm a frugal Scot you see :rotfl:
Anyway, the question I have is, is this a good idea or does it seem a bit stingy and mean? Can anyone think of any reason why this is a horrible idea?
Cheers.

Its your wedding! So you can do what you want! I know someone who didnt even have a evening reception, instead they flew out to there honeymoon! So tbh whats the difference if you just have it in the evening? I say, go for it! x0

Where were you looking that was 7k????!! lol
Do you mean married on the beach as the sun sets or do you have a place in mind overlooking the forth that can do the ceremony and the buffet?
Whats your budget and are you set on the Forth thing or just looking for something different?
I'm local and know a few places that could do your numbers and room for dancing but depends on what you like
ETA: Ooops, in answer to the actual question: buffet only is fine!0 -
Thats what I'm hoping to do, have the wedding as late as possible then straight to the local club for a disco & buffet.
As the others said it's your day!0 -
Thanks guys.
Csh - I'm in West Lothian, where are you? The venue we were looking at in in South Queensferry - it has a pier overlooking the bridges I think. You can marry on the beach on but it being Scotland, I don't want to have to worry about my hair blowing in my face or my make-up being sandblasted or washed off by the rain.
We have a couple of other venues in mind for the whole shebang but thought this might be a nice option. Our budget is 7k in total, which I know isn't tiny, but OH has ruled out a couple of venues because he's worked in them or knows someone who has. OH may die if he makes a face about one more venue, whilst doing nothing to help!!! :rotfl: :rotfl:
I'm a worrier - keep thinking through the worst options. Like if there's no sunset because it's just a driech day or my relatives gang up and say horrible things, or it just all goes horribly, horribly wrong.
The place we were quoted £7k for room hire was in West Lothian - admittedly it was rather grand but I didn't expect £7k worth of grandeur. Obviously that one was struck off the list pretty quickly.
Any suggestions would be welcomed and rewarded with virtual chocolate.Eu não sou uma tartaruga. Eu sou um codigopombo.0 -
I'm in Bo'ness. We are getting married at The Caves in Edinburgh which can do your numbers and ceilidh but I appreciate its not to everyones taste.
I went on Falkirk Council website and had a look through their licensed civil venues and there is heaps of stuff on there! You can hire Bo'ness Town Hall (which OK, its Bo'ness! But has lovely grounds and views over the forth) for something crazy like £35! Then just get your own caterers and bar in.
Not sure if WLC have the same sort of thing?
I know the Burgh Halls in Linlithgow has recently been done up as a venue but not sure of costs?0 -
I really liked the Caves as a venue but annoying H2B wasn't impressed

there is nothing wrong with having an evening wedding, however finding a registrar who is prepared to officiate after 3pm might be your hardest task
