I've recently bought a new computer and I am curious to whether a standard DVI to VGA cable will support the 23" 1080p monitor I have bought with it?
I understand that I could purchase a HDMI cable it would most definately support HD movies on the screen.
However, I don't want to go out and buy one if I don't need to.

If you are currently using an analogue VGA input on the monitor, you will almost certainly get a better quality image by using HDMI.0

It will work, but whether you get the quality is dependant on a number of factors.
However if you have DVI out on your PC, why are you trying to convert back to analogue at the monitor end?Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0 -
So you think I should buy a HDMI cable?
I'm not 'going back' to analogue at the monitor end... The monitor has a HDMI input or a VGA input.0 -

I can't see why not. VGA connected monitors were running at resolutions far in excess of 1080p at 2560x1200 well over a decade and a half ago. 1080p in the computing world, isn't that high a resolution.0 -

You can use a HDMi cable direct with one of these HDMi genderbenders
But you will still need sound via the old route

Why? VGA connections were used for resolutions 50%+ higher and at double the refresh rate 15 years ago.
It depends on the DaC on either side, somtimes on LCD screens it doesn't 'map' correctly and you can get bluring when the screen misplaces certain pixels.
Where as with a digital connection and your using the native res its always perfectly mapped.
DVI can be both digital and analogue btw.
One thing VGA does not support HDCP so anything protcted by HDCP will not play at full res (1080p) even if the monitor exceeds that resolution0
