A cheap hardware upgrade for about £20 would be to increas the RAM to 1GB.

1GB DDR for £20? Please tell me where so I can fill a van with it and sell it on Ebay. Its currently around £35. DDR is not cheap.

    To the OP:
Getting rid of McAfacrap and installing Microsoft Security Essentials will speed it up. Also in CCleaner, stop the following from running on startup:
    C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Album Starter Edition\3.0\Apps\apdproxy.exe
    C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe

You'll also find Adobe Reader quicklaunch which you can disable as well.

Would have been easier if you just gave us the model number. :)

    Anyway, I'm guessing it's a Toshiba 1800 or 1805 645712-4761.jpg

    Intel® Celeron® Processor
    clock speed : 1.1 GHz
Front Side Bus : 100 MHz
    2nd level cache : 128 KB

Come back with the full part or model number(to be found on the bottom of the laptop). i.e; something similar to PS183E-00VF1-EN or Satellite 1800-412

Either way, you can fit another 256MB of RAM into these machines. Then you can run a clean install of XP SP3 if you wish or try one one the Linux distros.

    Internet slow?,

Delete your IE proxy, HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = www-cache.reith.bbc.co.uk:80 (IE tools, internet options, connections, lan settings, untick use proxy)

or everything slow? How much ram, and what is your commit charge?

Uninstall mcafee, turn windows firewall on, and switch to Avast (it's lighter on ram than mcafee (and mse))

    http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

    http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.html

right click the avast icon near the clock and register.

None of this needs to be running/loaded all the time.

It's a Toshiba S1800-712, part number is PS183E-H1EPV-EN (how did you know?)

I had a quick scan for 'SODIMM 1GB' on eBay, seemed to be under £10, is this different from 'DDR'? If so, which is worth buying? (I know next to nothing about computer hardware so again apologies if that's a stupid question).
None of this needs to be running/loaded all the time.

    How do I stop them?

Again, thanks a lot for your help with this!

    Adam.

using hijackthis or autoruns (easier to undo if you make a mistake), or uninstall

Post your physical ram and current and peak commit figures from task manager/performance, otherwise we are guessing the reason for slowness.

Don't forget to read all before posting. :)
you can fit another 256MB of RAM into these machines...

    Spec would be 256MB RAM 32x64-100MHz PC100, 144pin SODIMM, 3.3v, Sync

So forget about any of those 1 GB RAM modules. :)

You can run a clean install of XP SP3 in order to speed things up straight away. Forget about tweaking this and tweaking that for now.
If it runs ok with a clean install of XP SP3, then you can decide if you want to source more RAM as you may want to multitask at some point. :)

If it doesn't run ok, you can take a look at Puppy Linux or one of the other suggestions. Xubuntu will run, but will still be slow.
