Problems with Nero...........

Just tried to back up my entire C: which was 5gb information / files (all music etc is on other partition.

Thought I was doing well

On DVD 1 I got this error message

"Back up file content differs from the hard drive date BK_01_09.DAT sector 114879

Data Verification failed"

and on the second DVD

"Read error on CD file BK_08_09.DAT

Data Verification failed"

BUT then I got the message Back Up process completed successfully.

Has it worked ? How can I check ?

Thanks in advance :)

  • Yes, it probably has worked. You can check by browsing the DVD and copying files from there to another folder on your hard drive, and comparing file properties and contents with the originals to make sure they are the same.

The verify errors have probably occurred because you have backed up the entire C: drive, including temporary Windows files whose contents have changed between being recorded on the DVD and the verify phase, which compares the file on DVD with the file on the hard drive.

Rather than the whole C: drive, I would just backup C:\Documents and Settings\. That will backup My Documents, My Pictures and emails etc. for all users (assuming you have used these default Microsoft folders for your documents and photos etc). Backing up C:\Program Files and C:\Windows is largely pointless as you'd have to reinstall them anyway from CD or download. Backup downloaded files by all means, however these can usually be downloaded again from the internet.

Better still, create an image of your entire C: drive using Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image.
  • Norton Ghost makes backups SOOO easy.
