Can I claim?

I have a Kwik Fit home insurance policy and recently added a 4800 valued engagement ring to it, for cover when it is in the house or outside the home.

Yesterday, during my holidays in Italy, I had it in a bag (with some other items). This is a bit of a long story but in summary:
- we were supposed to be returning home on a flight which was cancelled due to technical problems, so we had to be moved to a (terrible) hotel 15 minutes from the airport.
- I had my bag with the ring with me on the bus and left it on there when I got off to book into the hotel.
- I realised this a matter of minutes after getting off and ran back, but the bus was gone.
- I asked the hotel manager to contact the driver and he said he couldn't, he didn't have the number of the company (he'd basically grabbed them at the airport as he was short of buses to pick us all up).
- I went back to the airport to look for buses from that company that night, there were none around.
- I went back there very early this morning and waited around for hours, still no sign of them. I then had to catch the rescheduled flight.

Under these circumstances would I be eligible to claim the money for the ring?
As you can imagine, it's been a horrible 24 hours.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Without seeing your policy it is difficult to say. I would think you would have a good chance of claiming as you have specified the item on your policy. It will depend on whether you have cover when you are abroad. Do you know who the actual insurers are?

Apart from Kwik Fit all I can see is Woodbrook Underwriting, would that be them?

Also, as I left the bag, ie. it's my fault, would that damage the claim?

Have you rung the insurer and asked?

Not yet, I don't think I could take a negative response today.

If you have specified the item it will be covered for loss or damage. Providing you have the cover abroad I think you will be ok.

I assume that's the case because my girlfriend specifically mentioned the fact that we would be travelling abroad with it when adding it to the policy, I really hope so. I have just called and there's noone available now until Tuesday, I'm going to be sick with worry until then.

Will they expect a police report? Or would confirmation by the hotel be enough?

You need to read up on making a claim in your policy. Almost certainly they will expect that you reported this to the police.
  • Even for a loss rather than theft?

    Yes.

You have lost a £5k item! You need to read up your policy to make sure you are complying with it.
  • I didn't have any time for that, I had to fly back. I will try to get the hotel to report it now, they've been trying to locate the bus company (apparently), I hope that suffices.
