Extend range of Wifi signal

Options
Now then you clever people I hope you can help.

I have a Netgear wireless modem which works adequately but I now have an iphone which I'd like to use in an area of the house with a poor signal. (I get no mobile phone signal so must use wifi) I have tried the home-made tin foil covered antennas (from freeantenna dot com!) but this didn't boost it sufficiently. What piece of kit should I be looking for? The local PC shop recommended a power line kit and access point but I would like to spend considerably less than the £100 that I understand that to cost.

I've tried relocating the router to upstairs but then that compromises the signal strength downstairs where excellent strength is required.

Looking forward to reading your pearls of wisdom. Thank you.

Take a look at Maplin's website in the category "wireless network extenders" and you'll find products for less than half that.

Also, if your router is not very recent, you may get good enough coverage of the whole house by replacing the existing one with a new one with MIMO antenna, relocated upstairs.

Powerline wireless extender and adapter kit, £47.32 with free delivery. It's the same kit I use from the same supplier and works perfectly.

You can buy more powerful aerials for most wireless kit. They ship with approx 5Db aerials as standard but you can get Omni directional aerials that can have in excess of 10Db. This will help.

I have also used the home plug equipment that Fifer has used (different make) and found it very good. I used it to run an IP camera from my garage.

The one used was from fusionservices.co.uk/products/home_networking_plug_PLI-3020-02.html

I have checked today and they have a new 200Mbps wireless option.
