help not 4wd

    As said these use a Viscous coupling for the 4wd... and they commonly die of seizure. When they start seizing its like being stuck in 4wd with a 4x4 without a centre Diff.... Heavy steering and in general a horrible drive... The coupling is around £280 and easy enough to fit.

    Now if the coupling is dead and left dead... it can sometimes take out the front diff and in some cases the rear diff...

    I reckon the Viscous couplings dead and theyv'e removed the front prop to make it drive better and save a few quid.. the rear wheels will still turn as the rear prop etc are still connected.

    Obviously its only 2wd now and you bought a 4wd but running it in 2wd wont do it any harm... I ran my last 4wd without a front prop for months as the UJ had died and was far too lazy to fix it...

    Plenty of good Landrover parts places online... I've used Paddocks in the past.

    It won't matter if you remove the front prop, the back prop, or both props. The result will be the same... no drive to the rear wheels.

    The only thing that I can see that might cause the symptoms that the OP describes is a fault with the intermediate reduction unit (IRD)... although heaven knows what!

    Google 'Freelande'r and 'IRD' and you will find some companies that can help. I previously tried to post a link to a particularly helpful one but the whole post seems to have disappeared. :huh:
  • I'd be taking it back to the garage you bought it from and ask them to sort it. Maybe ask for it to be put up on their ramp, assuming they have one and stick it in 4th gear an spin the wheels.

    Not unusual for some owners to drop the propshaft to the rear to improve economy and rear tyre wear, but why buy a 4x4 in the first place?
    Easy enough to check with a quick look underneath, but beware LRs that have had this modification done, it could be that the rear diff and/or the middle support bearing are knackered!

    Even it the IRD fails a quick fix is to convert to front WD only.
    It's expensive to convert back if that was the reason though.

    Freelanders are FWD biased?... And its the rear wheels that are driven through the Viscous?.... I've just had a Google education

    Yes, but the OP said that the only the rear wheels were spinning which suggests no front drive. That is why I'm baffled.

    no i think it was just the back wheels spinning... he had a van prior to this and the van would just spin same as this freelander... hence why he wanted a 4wd,, i have 4wd on my kia and i can get up the track no probs and i have road tyres on mine..

    Not sure which ones at the moment.
