Reported fault to customer services - told 'Yes that can happen@
It's outside of warranty so told us we can order part for £130-200 (I can't quite remember exact ££ - too cross lol) We have only been in our house 2 years and it was new in before we moved in so it not like it's 5 years old - must be JUST out of warranty.
Emailed Whirlpool via website - this si my reply -
Dear Miss Bah_humbug
Thank you for your email regarding your Whirlpool oven. I was sorry to learn of the problems you have encountered.
The glass in our oven doors is safety glass and is manufactured in accordance with stringent European standards.
It is very rare for the glass in an oven door to shatter but in our experience one of the following is usually the cause.
1. The clearances on installation are critical and if not correct put stresses on the glass as it goes through the cycle of expansion and contraction during the cooking process until it eventually fails.
2. Actual damage to the glass itself such as a scratch or chip, which again will eventually lead to its failure.
Although this can be quite a startling incident, the fragments form small rounded pieces and are quite safe.
As the appliance is over 2 years old and out of guarantee we can repair your appliance but this repair would be chargeable. You should call your local Whirlpool service agent on 0844 815 8989 option 1 to arrange for an engineer to call or alternatively you can order the spare parts through our Spares Department on 0844 815 8989 option 2.
Please accept my apologies for any inconvenience caused.
Kind regards
I am absolutely livid - a warranty shouldn't mean that after that time it is free to explode and shower my kitchen with shards of razer sharp glass?
What if my nephew who was in the house at the time had been in the kitchen? It doesn't bear thinking about.
Anyone have any similar stories?
Any advice on how to procede? Sent sternly worded reply stating disatisfaction with links to several sites detailing same fault PLUS injuries receievd from such explosions dating back to 2006!! Asked for resolution before 3rd Sept or will seek advice.
Anyv thoughts?
Many thanks

My thoughts are it sounds familiar.
A quick search brings up the following, I am sure will make some interesting reading and you should know that you are not alone!

Happy reading!
Edit: by the way, just because something "could" have happens means literally nothing. Imagine if your nephew had climbed in the hot oven when you opened the door! and just because someone else was hurt really means little to your case aside from the fact the doors can and do explode. Just be thankful that no-one was hurt.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -
Haha yes apreciate that just because 'could' happen means nothing. Washers shouldn't be withdrawn due to that horrible case with the toddler.0

Normally you might have been entitled to a remedy as a consumer under the Sale of Goods Act but as it sounds like you didn't actually purchase the oven, and there's no retailer as such, so this is a bit of a non starter. You have no legal recourse against the manufacturer unfortunately. On the up side you now have a choice of getting rid of the whirlpool and buying a decent oven instead.0
