Passport photos

If you haven't enroled already, you're bound to need a few passport photos (each year) for uni's records, student cards etc. Usually you'd just go to a supermarket or somewhere and sit in a booth and get 4 photos for about £3.50 right? INSTEAD: Take them on your digital camera, go to Boots, use their digital photo printing facility - you get 6 passport size photos for 49p! The machine is a bit fiddly but if you can work it out you can even crop your photos and remove red eye etc. Ask for assistance if you're struggling. It's well worth it at that price! It also means you get to use a photo you're satisfied with, instead of having to settle for the one the booth takes. I used a booth last year that didn't say when the photos were being taken, only 1 of the 4 photos was actually useable because I was looking away in the others!

Or, if you've already taken photos in one of those booths, you or a knowledgable friend or relative can scan one into your computer and use software like Publisher or Word to tile them across an A4 page... Then you can print them on some cheap photo paper and get 20 to a page, and save some money!

Nice tip, but I wish I'd known this before, cos those £3.50 booths are a rip-off. I had to use three different machines before I found one that produced photos acceptable for my passport application- (1) too 'close' [no, my head's not that big!] (2) background too dark (3) glare on glasses. Hmmph.0

You can resize and crop your photos here.

If you have other digital photos to print and you're not in a rush. do it all together with an online company. If you've never used snapfish before, you get 30 free pictures, and free p&p if you use the code skyphoto (although code may not work anymore)0 -

(1) I got 8 passport size photos for 39p.
(2) They don't have to be all the same - you add photos to the layout one at a time, and you can have any combination. So you can get four pairs of passport photos for 39p!
My only problem arose because I had tried to crop the pictures to the correct shape and to meet the new UK passport requirements. The machine wanted to crop some more. Another time, I would take the uncropped photo and crop it in the machine, which is quite easy - you mark the top and bottom of the face, and a line down the middle, and the machine scales it for you.0
