Npower blocking the swtich and more mistakes!
Hi All
In June this year my partner decided to swtich supplier as he really was not happy with npowers customer service. Anyway he was and still is in credit with both gas and electric. I did a gas reading and got a letter confirming that Scottish Power supplied our Gas from 1st July so cancelled the direct debit to npower for the gas. So imagine our shock when npower then billed us this week for £169 upto the 13th August 2010.
So we rang Npower to query the bill they are insistent that its correct and they supply our Gas. ( will point out now this is an empty flat where nothing is switched on except the boiler and the flat has since been sold we just waiting to exchange contracts)
So I then rang scottish power who said no we took over on the 1st July 2010 more confusion and asked me to supply the serial number on the meter which i did this morning to discover they have the meter number for the flat next door _pale_.
To top this off scottish then informed us that npower refused to allow the change of electric to them with no reason. This really has ****** us off as they actually owe us by the last bill dated 18th August 2010 £289!!!!!
I am now worried that the meter details have been wrong for a while and my partner has actually been paying someone Else's bill for a while!
Waiting for my partner to finish work at 12 to ring npower (not been added to that bill yet so they wont talk to me)
will let everyone know what happens!!!

If there is a mix-up then you should not be able to switch until the details are corrected and it is confirmed that you are not in debt.
The flat being empty may not lower your bill much - standing charges for some nPower tariffs can be £180 per year for gas (but - good news - only £10 for electricity!).0 -
Should be easy enough to discover if there is any mix up.
Check the bills, or contact the suppliers if necessary, and confirm (a) they both have the same meter numbers and (b) that that meter number relates to your meter"Now to trolling as a concept. .... Personally, I've always found it a little sad that people choose to spend such a large proportion of their lives in this way but they do, and we have to deal with it." - MSE Forum Manager 6th July 20100 -
Hi all again
Did what was suggested and went thru all the bills i could back to may 2008. And they are a complete mess my partner has never ever been in debt for the electric they have always owed him yet never once given him a rebate. And the gas is just a complete mess readings are all over the place. He should be back soon so will ring them then.
Scottish Power arrange the swtich and as far as they were aware till i rang it had all gone thru correctly. They were working on the details and information npower gave them and it was only because we got the serial number anyone twigged there was a mistake. We have always paid by direct debit so to be honest that would have covered the standing charge anyway. Just so bloody confused to how scottish power have been given the details to the meter in the flat next door and i am now wondering who the hell has our meter details. Just checked the bills and the meter number on them does not match the one we took off the meter somewhere there has been a massive mistake :-(2008 wins

Hi coolmumh
Sorry to hear about your situation. This can happen if the National Grid database is holding a different meter serial number for your property. If you provide us with your address and Meter Point Reference (MPR) number (unique gas supply number for your property) then we will process a new application for you and will use the gas meter serial number that is held on the National Grid database.
The best advise I can give is to sort out the bills with NPower first and make sure they update all your correct supply details. Only once this has been done would I then consider making a new application to transfer supplier.
Let me know if you have any questions and I will be happy to help.
Kind Regards

Personally I'd want to know who provided the incorrect meter no. If it wasn't you I'd expect them to be the ones sorting this out & compensating you for any "excess charges" you may have incurred consequnetially. Energy companies are all too good at shrugging their shoulders & claiming it isn't their fault / problem.
Good luck.0
