Not accepted for credit card despite having no debt!!

Oh dear god! Just been reading Martins tips and it mentions about being associated with others in your household. My husband has got a loan and has had another one that he has paid off and he also used to go over his overdraft. He isn't over it now (as myself, who is good with money sorted this out for him) but could this affect me adversly with me being associated to him by marriage? Also we have a joint bank account with another bank. But then again, after reading Martins tips, surely being associated with someone who has had debts and paid it off would be GOOD for my credit application?0

If you don't have any credit records now, for all they know, the lenders can think that you were just laying down in the past couple years after doing a runner with unbelievably large debts, and were waiting until the traces disappear from your file.
Credit is something like work experience, if you don't have any, you will need to do some convincing to get the first one... Your bank is the best to approach in this case. When you absolutely *need* credit, it's already too late to get one.
If you don't need it now, it's a good time to start, but don't take any rejections personal. It's not about you, it's about the data that you provide. (Just like - son, sorry, you fail at math vs. son, you knew only 15% of the answers, you know I can't let you pass?)Enjoy the silence...0 -

Joint accounts indeed provide a financial linke between you (marriage *alone* doesn't). If he has a good credit history, that should make you somewhat more favourable credit-wise, but if he has any missed payments, then it can be just as bad...
Don't keep a card for "emergencies", they may withdraw it, or charge you dormancy fees - don't be afraid, just put on at least one purchase that *you would make anyway*, and pay it back in full. In 1-2 years, there's your history. It's just as simple (and tedious
) Enjoy the silence...0 -
I think joint finances make bigger impact on credit rating if they are bad and do not change much if they are good.
It proves that your husband can tackle debt, but it does not say anything about you.
But if it is bad the chances are that if he goes down you will end up paying everything for him or at least all the bills.
However I don't have that verified.0 -
Right in that case I'll kick his !!!! lol.
Thanks for the insight though. It's important to know.0 -
you should get copies of your report from all three credit agencies and see whats on them
ask your OH to do the same
obviously you should both be on the electoral roll (its against the law not to register and makes getting credit very difficult)
which credit card did you apply for from barcalys... they do a barclays initial which is specifically designed for 'beginners'
but first get the reports and get on the electoral roll0 -
Oh my god.
Just rang up the eqifax or whatever it is called after being requested to do so by the website and after asking me LOADS of questions (AND i had to ring up a stupid 0844 number from my mobile) he told me that he couldn't do it for me as I'd put in incorrect information into the website! I mean, what the heck? I entered in all that I knew about myself, when did companies start knowing more about you than you know yourself?!! I give up. I'll have to see what happens with the Experian when they email me.0 -
Oh my god the cheeky bleeders have even taken the two quid off me! :mad:0

Oh dear, that might be first sign of having a mistake on your credit report... Good job you are checking it out now!!
But don't panic, hopefully it's just something silly like date of birth or date of moving.0 -
