We eat about 3 pieces of fruit per day each and then have vegetables with our evening meal and sometimes some dried fruit too. It really plays havoc with me though.
    what plays havoc ?

    buying it or eating it

I like the idea of growing my own sprouting things. My son is doing GCSE catering so I think he would be interested as well. He likes doing stir fries, cutting up the meat and veg etc.

What do I look out for in the supermarket, just off to Tesco now - keep reading this thread for ideas intead of leaving the house!

I dont know what it is about kiwi fruit but they really make me feel unwell. I dont eat the skin so its not that (my kids do, is that normal?) It cant be the seeds because I can eat soft fruit and banans and you eat the seeds in them.

start with either Aduki beans, (little red beans) or mung beans (little green beans). In Tesco they are sold by the 500g bag, the bag is clear celophane and they are kept either near the rice and pasta or in a health food section, depending on the size of the store. While you are shopping, I'll find some links to the threads on this board about sprouting.

PS - If you don't have a bean sprouter, you'll need a glass jar or bowl (a large jam jar size will do), a piece of stocking or an old pair of tights, and an elastic band. :)

Excellent, tearing myself away from the computer now, this sounds exactly like my sons sort of thing. My student daughter is also trying to eat healthily so this could be woth her doing as well.

How much dried fruit counts as a portion?

    Mary

Hi, I think basically an handful counts as a portion, so 1 apple or an handful of grapes / raisens.

We eat alot of fruit / veg / salad, I assume salad counts as well.

We oftern say that 5 apples are alot cheaper than 5 bars of chocolate.

    Taken from: http://www.vegetarian.org.uk/goingveg.html

At least 5 Fruit and vegetables
To provide Folate, Calcium, Iron, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Fibre

Fresh fruit 1 medium piece - the size of a tennis ball
Dried fruit 1-1 1⁄2 tablespoons or 1 golf ball
Green or root veg 2-3 tablespoons or 1⁄2 tennis ball
Salad veg 80g or 1 large cereal bowl
  • I get an organic veg bag delivered - the big one @ £13 - because I felt guilty about not supporting local farmers. This week I got:

Potatoes, carrots, onions, leeks (std every week)
Huge bag of parsley (it's become pesto)
Lettuce, bag of rocket and other unidentified salad leaves
    Courgettes - yellow and green
    Cabbage
    Spring onions
    Tomatoes
And quite a bit of mud.....

    I also buy
Granny smiths - 2 bags - the only apples ds's and dh will eat
    Bramleys
    Fairtrade bananas
    Fairtrade easy peel citrus
    grapes
    frozen peas and sweetcorn
    raisins

Like a lot of others it is a fair proportion of our budget, but I make it a crusade not to waste any veg that come - you can get some interesting chutneys!!!

I love bean sprouts in cheese toasties too ;) Bean sprouts are brilliant in the winter. much better than buying all that out of season salad.
