Virus identified.

AVG free version has identified a virus - java/byte/verify infected, embedded object

java/byte/verify - infected, archive

I don't know how to access the file to see what it is and the healing option is not available. Move to virus vault is and also delete.

Any advice for me please.

The JavaBytever virus hides in the java cache, as indicated by the previous advice, but it's in a "hidden" location.

If you still have it do the following ...

    1. expose all hidden files & folders ... here is help if you're not sure how to do that ...

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/hiddenfiles.mspx

    2. Go to the java cache location usually ...

    C:\Documents and Settings\<user_name>\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\

....and delete everything in the cache folder(s) NOT the folder(s) themselves.

Make sure you update your java by going here ....

    http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

.... scroll down to the latest version ....

Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8

Don't foget to use Add/Remove Programs to nunstall/remove any older versions of java still on your system. They can attract malware just by being present on your computer.

Lastly, when done, remember to reverse the "Show hidden files & folders" routine to re-hide them.

Thanks pchelpman but that isn't working for me tells me it can't be found.

Sorry but I'm quite unintelligent when it comes to tech stuff, but thanks for taking the time to reply:beer:

I did expose hidden files etc.

What "can't be found"? The JavaBytever virus? If so you've probably cleaned it out.

That said, it could return. In case it does make a note of the removal instructions.

    Let us know.

There must be some confusion here ... you are not meant to type that in. It's an address on your computer ... just go find that file and delete the contents.
