Fungus on tree stump - edible?

Hi,
I've checked out the fungus on the tree stump in my garden and I think it's oyster mushrooms. Its flattish, coming out in horizontal layers, a kind of caramel colour. I did once feed a bit of it to my husband and he is still here :D but got a bit nervous.

Can I be sure it's oyster mushroom or not?

I am in no way saying you should eat these, as it's very difficult for an amateur to know which mushroom is which. But my mushroom book show several mushroom which look at lot like oyster mushrooms. You could look them up and compare to see which you have. Do read carefully the comparisons of gills, colour etc and if in any doubt please don't eat them.
Mushrooms which look like oysters with their Latin name:

    common oyster mushroom pleurotus ostreatus
    trumpet oyster mushroom pleurotus cornucopiae
    cockleshell fungus lentinellus cochleatus
    angels wings pleurocybella porrigens
    olive oyster panellus serotinus
    false oyster panellus stypticus
    velvet roll-rim tapinella atrotomentosus
    corrugated roll-rim tapinella corrugata
    soft slipper crepidotus mollis
    varied slipper crepidotus variabilis

    It's only a game

There's a website to help identify wild mushrooms in the UK

That's how I found out that I had the hallucogenic, mind-altering 'magic mushrooms' :eek:growing in my garden. people who dry, crush or prepare magic mushrooms are messing with a Class A drug (like cocaine or heroin) and leaving themselves open to prosecution. I had bought a large bag of well rotted horse manure mixed with leaf mould but there was more than I had bargained for in that compost!

Let the birds eat them, theyll think they can fly.

Are you sure it's not honey fungus? That's a classic one on tree / dead plant stumps.

I am afraid when it comes to wild fungus, I have to succumb to the supermarket shelves. I am a coward

I'm no expert - but the first question I would have is = what type of tree is it that the fungus is growing on?

ceridwen, we're told it was a horse chestnut tree but we never saw it as a tree, only as a stump
