Is there any reason why her cataracts can't be treated? I've had both of mine done and the results are almost immediate and make such a difference.
Maybe the best gift you could give her would be offering to follow this up, and go with her to the appointments etc. The actual ops are generally done as out-patients nowadays, in and out in a couple of hours, so she shouldn't find it too stressful.I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

Hi Queenie feel free to call in...
I am looking forward to this event too.we did one last year for the VE day celebrations and they loved it. Amongst my oldies I have two dd veterans, three land girls, an undercover signal operator, and two raf pilots who were prisoners of war. They tell some lovely stories. Even those who were civilians have great stuff to pass on.
I have made them ration books as entrance tickets and have arranged for a few army cadets to come and help with serving food etc.
The room is going to have blackouts on the window and i have managed to get hold of a cd with wartime songs and even a radio anouncement or two by churchill. I will be wearing my OS crossover type pinny and headscarf too as I work in the kitchen.
Food is going to be simple, Home made veg soup. hm crusty bread, butter, hm blackberry/apple jam, gooseberry jam, slices of spam and corned beef,
hm chutney, soft boiled eggs, and tea, cake for afters. I have also been given several bottles of elderberry wine so there may be some tipsy oldies afterwards.
Everyone is bringing one item or photo which reminds them of that era and we will all reminisce. I have even found a recording of an air raid siren to play during the afternoon.
I will give you an update tomorrow night,

just a quick idea, my dad is in a wheelchair, and we try to get things to increase his independence. He is particularly hard to buy for as he had very few hobbies before his accident, and haas no patience for them now.
- desk top water cooler so he could get his own drink in the night without getting out of bed
- a personal organiser, so he could keep all his stamps, contacts, cheque book etc in one place.
- a grabby stick (like a litter picker) so he can reach things on the floor, plus endless entertainment when the grandkids are there as he pretends to get them with it.
- autotrader type mags as cars are his thing
- autobiographies go down well with him
also, he can't get out shopping on his own, and definitely doesn't enjoy it, so my sisters or myself will go and get any gifts that he wants at birthday/xmas time for other people.
also just thought, a foot spa, as his feet are always really dry and horrid due to poor circulation, plus girly type gifts like pumice stones, foot cream.
i realise some of these problems apply to elderly people too, so could be appropriate ideas.
