You can get an audio file from wherever you want and assign it as a ringtone, and there is certainly no need to pay for it from a company that sells overpriced & under performing hardware that is castrated to 8uggery

you can't do that on an iphone, like you can with 'most' mobiles...
and the mentioned method above does not work for me either!! tried a few months ago....
you are supposed to be able to create ringtones with any song you purchase from itunes store, but it seems to only work in the USA.

You can buy ringtones in itunes - but they are not cheap at 99p
Mac users can make any sound or song into a ringtune with Garageband

Get any MP3, Copy it to Library, then highlight it, right click and selecet click get info, click the options tab, change the start time and end time to the bit in the song you want (has to be under 30 seconds) press ok.

Then when in the library again highlight the song again and click advance at the top, then create AAC version.

Drag the new version to your desk top, go to control panel, click tools, folder options, under view find 'hide extentions for know file types' and turn it off, click apply,

then go to your desktop, find the file, change the .M4a to .M4r, drag it back to itune and it will be put into the ringtones folder, sync and it will be on the phone.

Then on the iphone go to Settings, sounds, ringtone, and it should be at the top under custom ringtones

  • I'm not sure what 'Im doing wrong here but whatever I do to change the duration it ends up being full length again and therefore not being copied to the ringtones folder. Any ideas?

This definitely works, you do need to follow the instructions exactly, but I've made plenty of my own ringtones for my iPhone using it.
