Dvd drive not working on laptop

Hi can anyone help.

My mum was given an old laptop by my sister and she said the dvd drive was working since she had the pc.

My mum complained the laptop was slow and so my sister deleted all the old files and programmes off the laptop. But now the dvd drive is not working at all.

Could the driver have been deleted?

Any way to find out what the driver was and get it back?

Thank you.

Eject the drive. When you look at the tray, you'll see what looks like a round glass. Get a cotton bud, put the tip on the glass at a 45 degree angle and rotate the cotton bud a couple of times. Pop a disk on and see if it reads it then.
  • If you can open and close the drive under power, and on inserting a disc it tries to read, then it is polling ok. This means the Firmware is in tact and the mechanics are fine.

If you can see the Drive icon under My Computer, then the LAPTOP recognizes the drive as such. Go online to the LAPTOP manufacturers website, download driver updates for the LAPTOP and this could fix it.

If this is all useless, IM me and explain EXACTLY what is happening. removable media drives rarely properly break so a fix is probably out there somewhere.
Marry a Foreigner, its so much cheaper!
  • Thanks for the replies. The drive is not showing in My Computer. Anyone know how I can get it back? Thanks.
