Pregnant- just been made redundant

Hi all!

I live within the UK, and I was just wondering about pregnancy and redundancy.

I don't want to kick up a real stink, I just wanted to ask if it is legal to make me redundant while pregnant?

So, my department at work hasn't been doing so well for months, and I suppose we all knew that redundancy was on the cards. I announced I was pregnant at 12 weeks, and having worked there for 2.5 years I was definetely eligible for maternity pay. However, they have decided to close the department down next year. I am going off on maternity at the end of the year, and since they will have started to pay me my maternity, they must continue, meaning I am getting the full maternity package I was entitled to as an employee, plus a redundancy payment.

I think this all sounds fair, and they will not be letting me go until my contract ends next year, although I will never be returning after my maternity.

I assume since they are shutting down the department, and no-one will be taking over my job that it all seems above board.

Thanks for any suggestions in advance! :o

The department is closing down, nothing whatsoever to do with getting rid of you as you are pregnant. You are getting a maternity package and a redundancy package, I can't understand the problem here?

I don't think there is a problem. i think she is just making sure she's been treated fairly.

I suppose it was the question that I have highlighted that I found very odd.

    Hi

It's not illegal to make a pregnant woman redundant but it would be against the law to make a woman redundant because she was pregnant. At least that is my understanding of it.

It doesn't look like there is a problem in your situation.

    Congratulations on your pregnancy!
