Telewest line "The number you are dialing is temporary unavailable"

People that call me keep hearing a fault message on my Telewest phone line "The number you are dialing is temporary unavailable". This tends to happen about 2-3 times a month where people will not be able to phone it from another phone. The Telewest phone is connected to a First Telecom adaptor. Does anyone have similar problems with their Telewest line in the Bradford or wider area??

It sounds as though you have an intermittent problem possibly something TW should investigate although as it's intermittent it's obviously harder to determine what is causing it.

You should mention to friends/family that if they have this problem again to ring from a mobile or something and see if that helps. The reason behind this is that it may not be a TW fault but whichever company they use to make the call from.

For example, if your friends/family normally ring you from their landline (say BT for their outgoing calls) and discover this problem then ask them to ring from a mobile and see if it rings. As soon as it starts ringing then cut off and ring from their landline again and if it still says, "The number you....." but you can get through from BT then it could be an intermittent BT problem.

Remember though that there are a few companies that are used to carry calls so although your friends/family may have a BT line they could use another company like Primus for their outgoing calls.

What I'm trying to say is that if you can establish beyond doubt (ideally) that it doesn't matter which telecom network is used the problem still exists - this then would suggest it's an intermittent telewest problem.

You say people who call you keep hearing it but can you clarify it's always certain people or is it everyone/anyone when it happens?

This problem is not related to First Telecom adapter as this is used purely for outgoing calls and not incoming.

The message itself indicates its not a wiring problem within your house - it'll be somewhere along the line before it reaches your house that the problem is there.

You do though, need to try and establish if its only happening when ringing from a certain telephone company hence why I suggested using mobile or when this happens.

As I said earlier, because it's intermittent it can be difficult to trace but the problem I can't see being your fault at all (ie internal wiring) - it has to be TW or another telecom company.
